Basic Information on Online Associate Degree Programs

By: Kaye Fretz

You might want to consider online associate degree programs. This could be a great opportunity for you to finally complete higher studies and get ahead with your career plans. Before you choose your degree, you might want to consider some important facts about online associate programs.

Fact 1: Associate degrees offer a variety of options.

There are various reasons why people decide to take associate degrees. For some, this may be more affordable than a four-year bachelor's degree program. A full time associate program can take as little as two years to finish. Others specifically choose to take this option so they can quickly get entry level work after completion. An associate program can also be a good way to test your interest and capacity for a field before you decide to transfer to a bachelor's degree program. Associate courses are either intended for entry level occupations or for transfer to a full four year program.

The different degrees that you can earn in an associate program are: Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, Associate in Applied Science and Associate in Occupational Studies. Depending on your chosen degree type, you can hope to prepare for work or further studies in such areas as performing arts, marketing, management, health, information technology, law, education and criminology.

Fact 2: Good online schools are in equal footing with established physical schools.

Online associate degree programs were once seen in a negative light. Some employers seemed to think that a degree from a school with a campus was still better than one from an online institution. Many people no longer think this way but a couple still do. This is most likely because there really are online schools that are no more than fronts for diploma generators. Reputable online schools however have real programs that you can trust.

One way to make sure that you are with a good school is to check its accreditation. Online schools are not exempt from the requirements of regional accreditation boards. Although instructional quality will still vary per school, accreditation will at least guarantee that they meet minimum curriculum requirements.

Fact 3: Online associate programs aren't easier than campus programs.

One other misconception about online programs is that they have taken the challenge out of studying. Some people opt for online programs because they believe they can breeze through a course quickly and easily. Online programs however can have the same level of difficulty as classroom programs. In fact, a number of online programs may require more research and a higher level of reading comprehension. You can therefore expect to be sufficiently challenged with an online degree.

Fact4: Much of your potential to succeed depends on your inner qualities.

One of the best advantages of online degrees is the level of freedom you get from it. Online degrees are quite flexible when it comes to schedule of lessons and requirement submissions. You are able to plot your study time better to fit your work and home schedules. This arrangement however comes with a price. It automatically means that you are also your own police. You have to be responsible and driven enough to push yourself to study at your scheduled time.

Online associate degree programs are truly worth a shot. Check the details of associate degrees first before enrolling in a program.
