Broadband Phone Service - Benefits And Drawbacks

By: Robert Pierre

Communications technology surrounds us in todays modern world. We are becoming used to touching a button and being able to communicate by email, telephone, video and many other media with a few keystrokes or the touch of a button. Broad telephone services are simply one of the recent developments that is using the internet backbone to enhance our ability to communicate cheaply and simply.

Broadband phone services help you to make calls while you stay connected to the internet. Therefore you get the benefits of two latest technologies at the same time. In the way it works, high speed internet is connected with a hardware adapter to enable voice calls on a broadband phone. A cable modem or DSL is best suited for a broadband phone to function. However most functions of a broadband phone service would be disabled if you are on dial-up, or wireless broadband through a satellite subscription.

Now lets look at the features of a broadband phone service in comparison to a regular phone.

1. Reliability - compared to a normal home telephone broadband telephony is not as dependable and is completely dependent upon an internet connection being maintained at all times. No internet connection and there are no broadband telephone calls so ensuring that your Internet Service Provider or ISP provides a very high standard of connectivity is important.

2) Portability - one of the key features of a broadband phone. Portability would mean number portability. This service allows you to continue with the same telephone number which you owned prior to subscribing. You could exercise your discretion to keep the same number or change it.

3) Security - for security reasons this service comes with a lock-in which means it will not allow you to change the users on the account. Should you do so then high service charges or change of ownership fees are charged to you.

4) Sound quality - compared to the usual phones sound quality is not as good. But over the years this shortfall has been overcome. Some calls are clear but in general you may experience a small delay or lag when you speak to the other person.

As you can see broadband phone services do suffer certain limitations. However, the price benefits, especially for making long distance calls, outweigh most of the downsides.

To ensure uninterrupted broadband phone service make sure you shop for an efficient plan. Keep in mind key factors like cost for the plan, reliability, ISP, and internet protocol that the broadband phone service uses. Technical advances might tempt you to go for the latest, but make sure you do your homework before you make a decision.
