How To Create More Curb Appeal

By: Alyssa Arnelle

It's the little things that count the most, right? So why do we seem to forget that when it comes to increasing the value of our home? Believe it or not, the small changes can have just as big of an impact as the bigger ones.

The small tasks below can be done over the weekend or in just a couple of minutes. You can get the family to join in on the fun too. Quick, easy, AND fun? Sounds good to me.

Plant Flowers

Flowers can brighten up the outside of your house in a big way. Choose brightly colored flowers like Petunias, Marigolds, Sweet Alyssum or Zinnias and you'll instantly see the difference. Best things about those types are that they're cheap and low-maintenance so you don't need to be a gardening expert to maintain them.

Yellows, oranges, and pinks give a more cheerful appearance to the outside of your home. Be care when choosing purples or blues; they can have a more subtle effect that you may not want. Wood mulch in a plant bed will also give a nice contrast.

Some great places for flower accents are under windows in a flower box, in clay pots around the porch or doorway, and in plant beds around a tree or walkway. If you keep them well watered, they will make your house look very valuable.

Take a trip to your local garden center. The associates there will be able to assist you in making the best choice for your purpose and region you live in. Here's a good tip: annuals are cheaper than perennials, so they'll be perfect for a project like this.

Replace Your House Numbers

This may seem like a rather small task but it will make a difference when it comes to improving the exterior look of your home. It's especially important if your house numbers are missing, if they are not easy to see or are just old and need to be replaced.

If your house number is carved into the exterior surface of your home, be certain that it's still visible from the street. If you can't see the numbers and they are recessed into the brick or stone, all you need to do is paint them a crisp, contrasting color so that they will stand out.

An easy technique for doing this is to use a sponge dipped into paint. A sponge brush will work very well too. Clean the grooves out before you paint. Then, carefully apply the paint into the engraved numbers. You'll be surprised at what a professional result you can achieve in such little time and effort.

House numbers that are mounted onto the exterior of the house, like over the garage or by the entry, should also be visible from the street. Make sure they're in good condition. If not, replace them.

It's especially good to replace house numbers that are rusty, if they have pieces missing or if a number is completely gone. They are readily available at hardware stores and home building centers in your area. They have all kinds of styles for good prices.

This also applies to house numbers that are on your mailbox. If they are weathered, torn, or missing, get new ones. You can use stickers or stencils; either are cheap and easy to use. You'll be amazed by how much more valuable new numbers will make your house look.

After doing these 2 easy tips you should be very proud of the improvements you've made on your home. They sound overly-simple but you will be able to see how much better your home looks instantly!
