If you add a little pump to the pond to create the pond have moving water, then it will keep things such as mosquitoes away of it. There is no end to the number of things that you can accomplish with stones in your backyard. The great news is that the majority of it can be done in a day, and stones (for the most part) make no cost that much to work with.
